A Sour Taste of Camp Spat | Asylum Green

As the final leafs fell from the trees last fall, I ventured into a once popular area of the Catskills, in New York. The air was crisp, cold in the mornings and refreshing in the evenings.

Scattered throughout the Catskills were hundreds of abandoned hotels. Over the past 8 or 9 years I’ve ventured here to visit those hotels and see how quickly they’ve fallen apart. Some hotels I first visited have collapsed entirely, some have been demolished.

By chance I ran into this summer camp— once for young Jewish boys, now falling apart in the woods. Some walls had completely collapsed, others stood strong, supporting what was left of Camp Spat.

For a small place, it was a pleasure to shoot. Rich colors and a hidden Shule made our quick stop on the side of the road very much worth it.
